We have recently donated two vital defibrillators to be installed at Half Moon Bay Marina, which were funded through its fun Bangers to Bluff charity car rally fundraiser.

A defibrillator is a medical device that delivers an electric shock to a person’s heart to restore a normal heartbeat during cardiac arrest or a dangerous arrhythmia.

Club president Marie Raos and past-president Martin Duffy recently met at the location of one of the newly-installed defibrillators to celebrate the vital contribution to public safety.

“These defibrillators could make all the difference in an emergency,” Raos says.

“Thanks to the success of Bangers to Bluff, we can invest in projects that directly benefit the community.”

Duffy, who’s long championed the club’s service initiatives, emphasises the importance of the fundraiser’s impact.

“Bangers to Bluff is not just about the journey. It’s about giving back.

“This donation ensures boaties, marina visitors, and locals have access to life-saving equipment when it matters most.”

The club says while there are several defibrillators already installed at the marina, they’re available only during business hours.

“These two new units are accessible 24/7, providing crucial emergency support at any time of day or night.

The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay celebrated a milestone on the 11th of March, when they were again host for the 26thyear at the Pakuranga Golf Club.Stephen Glading part of the Charity Golf Organising Team has assisted with most of the events.

“The 26 years has gone very quickly, and we have had so much fun organising and executing them year after year it has become like a well-oiled machine. We are now back to pre-covid events attracting 38 teams.”
The Annual Charity Ambrose Gold Day has been supported by two principal sponsors Continental Cars Audi and AA Business Solutions for over ten years. All holes were also sponsored and by many local businesses such as Airey, Foodtech, RSM and Team Raos, again for over 10 years.

This year’s principal beneficiary is the Rising Foundation who have been working alongside the Rotary Club to assist with the organisation of the event. “Over the years many local charities have benefitted from the generosity of the attendees and sponsors of the Golf Day and that is one of the reasons we continue to host it”, added Stephen”.

The Rising Foundation was founded in 2009 and operates a five-to-seven-year voluntary programme to assist young people in high school and beyond. These young people are supported until they are successful in tertiary education or employment. Following the function the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay was able to present the Rising Foundation a grant of $18,000 to support the life changing work.

The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), run by Rotary Districts 9920 and 9910, and supported by Rotary Half Moon Bay is a youth programme that simulates the workings of the UN General Assembly. Senior secondary students represent countries and debate global issues such as climate change, inequality, and conflict. The event builds awareness of international obligations, and teamwork as students explore how countries work together to address global challenges.

MUNA attracts over 300 students annually and mirrors formal UN processes including lobbying and resolution debates. Held over a weekend, the Assembly encourages cultural understanding and aligns with Rotary’s peacebuilding objective.

MUNA also offers valuable personal development. Students gain confidence in public speaking and learn to debate with clarity and respect. They practise negotiation and persuasion, sharpen critical thinking, and experience the importance of give-and-take in reaching consensus. The Assembly fosters an appreciation for diverse viewpoints and the discipline required for formal debate—skills that serve participants well beyond the event.

In 2025, MUNA will take place from 30–31 May. The entry fee is usually $275 per team of three, with costs often shared by schools and sponsoring Rotary clubs. Volunteers from Rotary, Rotaract, and RYLA help organise and support the event.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a week-long residential leadership development programme for young adults aged 20 to 28, hosted by Rotary District 9920 including Rotary Half Moon Bay. The 2025 programme is scheduled for 21–28 June at Willow Park, Eastern Beach, Auckland.

RYLA is designed to enhance participants' leadership abilities through a combination of workshops, discussions, and practical exercises. Facilitated by community and business leaders, the programme focuses on developing skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Participants engage in activities that challenge them to apply these skills in various contexts, promoting personal growth and resilience.

The programme brings together a diverse group of young leaders from across industries, cultures, and backgrounds, fostering meaningful networks and cross-cultural understanding. Through collaborative projects and community involvement, participants gain insights into effective leadership and the importance of service.

Applicants are typically nominated and sponsored by local Rotary Clubs within District 9920, which encompasses Central, Eastern, and South Auckland, as well as several Pacific nations . The cost for attending RYLA in 2025 is $1,250 plus GST. Interested individuals should contact their local Rotary Club or visit www.ryla.co.nz for more information and application details.
